Tonic Water originated in India in 1825. In order to combat malaria, the British Army stationed in India took quinine powder.
The downside to this is that Qunine Powder on its own is incredibly bitter, so they mixed their qunine power with sugar, soda water, and gin to create the ultimate cocktail, the G&T!
Singapore Distillery’s Amberosa tonic water is unlike other tonic water in that we use Cinchona Bark to get our tonic its characteristic bitter taste, instead of the with a solvent extract that is usually substituted by other manufacturers: quinine hydrochloride/sulphate.
The natural Cinchona Bark that we use is all natural and gives our tonic a beautiful Amber colour. Hence the name, Amberosa.
Using Cinchona Bark results in a gentle, mellow tonic water with none of the cloying, sharp bitterness of Quinine. Hence, Amberosa Tonic Water does not smother the refined taste of the botanicals and herbs in Gin.
We’ve made this tonic water with fresh cucumbers to give it a light, refreshing, cucumber flavour that goes perfect our gins (especially Kyuri Gin).
